How to compare yourself to others

We just can’t live without comparisons. For most of us it all started with our parents comparing us to other children. Here we are as adults and the comparisons have not stopped. We have now continued on this journey with great vigor and just can’t stop playing the comparison game. If you are a player, then it’s good to know where you stand. Smart comparisons are great and can be great tools for improving yourself. However, done the wrong way it’s an exercise in futility. We all have heard about not comparing apples to oranges. We can use the same principle of not comparing apples to oranges to make smart comparisons to empower ourselves with insights to be better.

NO CAO - NO Compare Apple to Oranges approach of comparing yourself other
  • A non-player cannot be compared to a player
  • Don’t confuse the marketing with the product
  • Rethink the people who you are comparing yourself
  • Compare yourself with yourself
  • Benchmark with the best
  • End goal of comparisons is action

A non-player cannot be compared to a player
You are envious of the success of person who is hustling around all day, while you are taking it easy. Either start hustling, start playing or else start comparing yourself to others who are taking it easy

Don’t confuse the marketing with the product
Don’t compare your life with the curated life of others you see on Instagram or Facebook. Compare your real life with the real life of others. Never compare the Instagram and Facebook life others with yours.

Rethink the people who you are comparing yourself
Don’t compare yourself with your class mate who is making more grands than you. If you have to compare, then compare yourself with the college dropout or the poor student who is now a millionaire. When you compare yourself against your class mate it may make you jealous about your class mate, which is not great for your relationship with that class mate. When you compare yourself with someone outside your social circle, it will either inspire it or you will ignore it.

Compare yourself with yourself
Comparing yourself of today with yourself of yesterday is the best comparison possible. Are you becoming better? Are you growing? Are you progressing? Answering these questions seriously is the best in approach to comparisons.

Benchmark with the best
Is your friend, colleague, neighbor world class? If not, then forget them. Find yourself great role models to look up to and try to learn from them. Comparing yourself with friends, colleagues and neighbors will only generate envy and jealousy. Comparisons with role models will generate inspiration.

End goal of comparisons is action
Comparisons which gives you insights about why someone else is better and it inspires you to take the actions required to make yourself better is the best outcome of any comparison. You learn about the hard work of others which makes them successful. You learn about the tactics and strategies of others which make the do great. You apply them in your life. It’s an effort worth its while or else it was an exercise in futility.

Can't resist the urge to compare yourself with others. Indulge yourself. However, be a "No CAO" (pronounced as No cow - no comparing apples to oranges)
