What do you take away from your job

For around 75% of the people who I have seen, the simple answer is that you take the salary from your job every month and the ability to get away with doing the minimum work while looking ok in the team. Once a year, you take away a salary hike which will most certainly leave you dissatisfied and if you are lucky a promotion. For some it is their title, the power their hold in their team or set up, the ability to socialize with a select few in your team (though they may hate most of the people around them). For a very few its about the learning, growth opportunities. Here is a longer list of the more valuable things which you can take away from your job.

Irrespective of whether you love or hate your current job, see it as foundation on which your dream job will  be built. To prepare a strong foundation of the dream job which you will one day get, take away the following from your current job

  • Ability to practice at the cost of your employer to become better at what you do
  • Watch and learn from others (peers, superiors, customers etc.)
  • Learn new skills at the expense of your employer outside of your current job role (Use training opportunities or volunteer and request your boss to let you participate in activities outside your current job role)
  • Industry contacts
  • A network
  • Allies
  • Mentors
  • A following (definitely among those who are below you, if not among your peers or superiors)
  • Opportunity to mentor others
  • Practice building your personal brand (what do you stand for)
  • Social validation based on the brand of the company you work for
Don’t restrict yourself to the easy stuff which all take away from their jobs namely
  • Flexibility from company policies
  • Perks
  • Titles
  • Promotions
  • Hikes
  • Salary
