Who am I?

Who am I ? It’s been a question which has been asked since the start of our species. It is a philosophical question with complicated answers. However, I have simplified the answer for myself. It works for me. It is a simple answer to difficult questions which I can keep in my mind even in the most difficult of times. I am the player, coach and spectator. Understanding Who am I at different points of time gives me a self-identity and simple tool to help me survive in difficult times and ensures that I don't go off track during the great times.

Who am I?

I use the analogy of sport while understanding the game of life. When I see myself playing the game of life then it becomes very easy to understand "Who am I?". At any point of my time I see myself in one of the three roles
  1. Player
  2. Coach
  3. Spectator

Player – I am a player when
  • playing an active role in managing the affairs of life
  • hustling
  • learning
  • creating
  • doing
  • focused
  • problem solving
  • not giving up
  • have hope even though I have not won
  • in control of my attention, emotion and intention
Coach - I am a coach when
  • helping another player become a better player
  • helping another coach become a better coach

Spectator – I am a spectator when
  • passive
  • reactive
  • given up
  • complain about problems - rather than solving it
  • feel life is hopeless
  • fell someone else is in control of my attention, emotion and intention
It is our choice that we want to play the game of life or help coach others become better players and coaches. If we actively don’t choose to be either a player or a coach, we default to be a spectator.

Are you a player or a coach, if not then you are a spectator?

I have tried to figure out things for myself. What about you?

Who are you?
